This joke has so much more meaning now than it ever has.

Once upon a time in the kingdom of Heaven, God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the Archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God, “Where have you been?”

God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downward through the clouds, “Look, Michael. Look what I’ve made.”

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, “What is it?”

“It’s a planet,” replied God, “and I’ve put life on it. I’m going to call it Earth and it’s going to be a great place of balance.”

“Balance?” inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of earth.

“For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, but cold and harsh while southern Europe is going to be poor but sunny and pleasant. I have made some lands abundant in water and other lands parched deserts. This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.”

The Archangel, impressed by God’s work, then pointed to a group of islands and said, “What are those?”

“Ah,” said God. “That’s the Philippines, the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful beaches, rivers, mountains and forests. The people from the Philippines are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as carriers of peace and love.”

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, “What about balance, God? You said there would be balance.”

God replied, “Wait until you see the idiots in their government.”

Disclaimer: I’m not really familiar with the whole “Mangudadatu and Ampatuan” case, I don’t know the names or details about the case. This entry would pretty much confuse you because of my lack of information.Anyway, I just felt the urge to say something about it.

From what I know 52 people were killed massacred during the convoy of the Mangadadatu side as they went to file the candidacy of the current vice mayor of Maguindanao (also a Mangadadatu, I can’t recall the name) who is planning to run as mayor of Maguindanao going against the Ampatuan family. The convoy consisted of female family members of the Mangadadatu clan including the wife of the one who’s going to run, his sister and I’m not sure if its the daughter of the one who’s going to run or the daughter of his sister. The convoy also consisted of reporters and other men from the media to cover the filing. I heard from my mom that the reason why the wife was the one who was going to file the candidacy was because females are somewhat respected more.

Unfortunately the turn of events was abhorring. All were massacred, the family members and the media representatives, all dead.  Watching the news the husband(the one who’s going to run) told what was done to his wife and to the other family members of the Mangadadatu. “Binaril sa suso, nilaslasan ung ari, binaril ung ari, tinusok ung mata, pinutol ang paa”* These were not the exact words, well they’re close, but they are not what he said exactly” All of this was done to the family members, including one who was pregnant.

Hearing these details, it’s horrifying to think that Filipinos would go to this extent to attain power. People all over the world labeling the Philippines as one of the most dangerous place to live. Labeling our government as the most corrupt(I would have to agree). Power,money and pride smears the Filipino name with blood and death. It’s sad that after Ondoy where we were so proud as to how we became heroes to our fellow country men who were in dire need of help. Now we are faced with a case that stains our name and country.

“Eternal Rest Grant onto Them O Lord and Let Perpetual Light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen”
